Round 14: Macedon Vs Romsey A Grade

Macedon 62 Won 19 Romsey

This week we had 2 players out from our mid court and trialled another attacking combination. The main purpose of todays game was to trial different defensive styles and experiment further in our attack. The cost of this may be the score line, but heading into the back end of the season it is important that make sure that we have all basis covered.

Our first half was played with uncertainty and we weren’t honouring the lead. We struggled to play to the umpire and were becoming very frustrated with the relaxed style of umpiring. 16 turnovers in 30 minutes is a good indication of the work we weren’t doing on the court, particularly in our attack end.  Shooting wasn’t great converting 25 from 38 attempts but this was always going to be a challenge when their defenders were able to defend from 30cm away.

Defensively we were very heavily penalised all over the court for contesting but was only pinned for 1 obstruction in the first half of the game. The pressure we were applying, didn’t match the umpiring and we needed to adjust in order to stay in play. Defensive pressure was outstanding (33 recoveries) and so was our rebounds. Romsey’s goalers shot at under 50% as and the pressure build they continued to make mistakes. We had a reasonable lead 25- 9 going into the second half.

We refocused heading into the second half, going back to the purpose of todays game and moving back to a familiar goaling line up, giving Ash the opportunity to play WA with a familiar goaling line up. We reduced our second half turnovers to 7 and had plenty of feeds and assists, trying to find a close shooting position for our goalers, while having to deal with Romsey defenders defending from a very close position. Volume was up in the 3rd quarter, converting 17 goals while missing an uncharacteristic 9 shots. We needed to clean up the goal conversions in the last quarter and with very quick ball movement we were able to do this. We quickly shot 20 more goals, stretching our goals for to 62.

Defenders played the box extremely well in the 3rd quarter with only 1 contact and no obstructions. Romsey couldn’t find any room to breath or space to move into. The rewards came with 8 clean intercepts, 4 rebounds from 4 missed goals and a gain. The hard work continued into the last quarter but we were back to hearing the whistle for contact penalties. Cleaning up the contest and defending space, gave Katie and Janelle 4 intercepts each. 5 of Romsey’s last quarter misses were all rebounded by Katie, depriving Romsey of making a dint on the score board. Romsey finished with 19 goals.

A shout out to Ash C and Demi Young for contributing to the A grade win and to Shanae for putting on the GS bib and getting the job done.
