To commemorate ANZAC Day, as always, Macedon hosted teams from Rupertswood. The weather was perfect and everyone played with added resolve for the occasion. However, all but one of our teams lost to the dominant Rupertswood.

The netball teams all put on the great show. A Grade in particular were performing well as they came back from being over 10 down to score goal for goal up until the final siren, finishing just one point down. C Grade netballers were victorious, coming from 6 behind to win by 2 goals in the end.

Our football teams performed well and their final scores did not the effort they displayed on the field. But regardless of the scores, everyone enjoyed the day and were proud to be playing on behalf of our club.

The ANZAC Day games were used to raise funds for the Commando Welfare Trust. This trust provides assistance to families of Commando’s killed or wounded in action and every year we host current and ex-serving Commandos as well as other current and ex service personnel at the game. This year, in conjunction with the Macedon Cats Junior Club, we ramped up our efforts and added an additional event to the card.

The 120 metre sprint was held at half time, with two races – one for the U17s and one for Seniors. Each club was invited to field one player per race wearing their club jumper. The races were in honour of, and commemoration of, Victorian Cross and Medal for Gallantry winner, Corporate Cameron Baird.

Cameron was an outstanding footballer who played junior football in the Riddell League and for the Calder Cannons. Cameron’s family is thrilled that the race has been named in his honour. We are pleased to announce that Macedon Junion Louis Hansford beat a strong lineup to win the under 17s race.

There was a $500 prize for a senior race, sponsored by Premier Office Furniture, with an equal donation of $500 to the Trust. There was also a $250 prize for the U17s sponsored by the Macedon Junior FNC as well as special trophies for both winners.

Two players were presented with medals at the weekend:

  • McDougal Medal – Prue Stanley (Rupo)
  • Grumont Medal – Tom Waters (Macedon)
