Round 7: Macedon V Melton Central - B Grade

Macedon (40) V Melton Centrals (43)

We always knew that Melton was going to be a challenge considering they had only dropped 1 game, but we were up for the challenge. We started the game a little rusty off the back of 2 weeks of no netball and this showed on the court with our accuracy, choice in pass and defence (so all over the court). In the first quarter we lost 5 opportunities through bad passes and 6 inaccurate shots and was put out of play 12 times, giving a quality team like Melton an opportunity to set up and steady their ship.

We cleaned it up in the second quarter but this was starting to become a game of scoring at each centre pass. It just took one team to make one extra error to hand a 2-goal lead to their opponent. Whilst we had 5 intercepts, giving us a chance to get back in the game, our 6 missed goals and an opposition shooting at 94% accuracy meant that we stayed in chase mode. 19 -25

Steady attacking, strong centre pass receives and accurate goaling gave us that push that we needed, we just needed to win more ball. Defensively we tired and the only recoveries for this quarter came through our GK Jess, with 4 intercepts and 1 rebound. One end held up while the other slipped. We caught them and were trailing by 4. 32- 36.

We kept the team the same and came on with the team goal of ‘knowing the moment’. We drew the last quarter (8 all) with a much-improved defensive effort from all players on court. 11 recoveries but we just didn’t have the stamina to turn them into punishing goals. We won the 3rd quarter by 2 and drew the last, it was the first half lead of 6 goals that Melton got out to that we couldn’t recover.

A high scoring game with lots of learning.

Best on court goes to  Madi Brennan
